14. The fighting stopped when Syrians tied the copies of the Quran to the ends of the spears. Then it was decided that both the parties should nominate an arbitrator, each to decide between Hazrat Ali (RA) & Hazrat Muawiya (RA).

17. Hazrat Amr bin al-Aas (RA) convinced Abu Musa al-Ashari into entertaining the opinion that they should desive both Hazrat Ali (RA) & Hazrat Muawiya (RA) of the caliphate, & give to the Muslims the right to elect the caliph.
18. Hazrat Ali (RA) refused to accept the verdict of him stepping down & for an election to be held & found himself technically in breach of his pledge to abide by the arbitration.
19. Feeling that Hazrat Ali (RA) could no longer look after their interests & fearing that if there was peace, they could be arrested for the murder of Hazrat Usman (RA), Kharijites broke away from the force.
20. Through an agreement Hazrat Ali (RA) & Hazrat Muawiya (RA) divided the Muslim empire into two parts. According to this agreement, Syria, Egypt & the Western areas were given to Hazrat Muawiya (RA) whereas Hijaz, Iraq & the Eastern Provinces went under Hazrat Ali (RA)'s control.
